Chelsea Price, a Title 1 reading teacher, was named Mustang Elementary’s Teacher of the Year for 2018-2019. Price knew when she was in elementary school that she would be a teacher. There was no grade level or subject she had to teach; she just had to teach.

“I was in 3rd grade when I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up and surprisingly my mind never changed,” she said. “I had so many amazing teachers along the way who helped me confirm my decision.”

Price has been teaching for five years. She works with students who are behind in their reading skills. Price struggled with reading herself when she was a child.

“I can totally relate to many of the students in my class with their own struggles, and I think it makes them feel better,” she said. “I love sharing my own struggles and letting them know they can do it.”

Price said teaching is hard, but it’s also rewarding. Each one who comes through her door every day provides an opportunity for her to make a difference.

“I love getting to know my students and hearing their stories,” she said. “I feel like my teaching is more successful when I know more about them and they know I'm invested in them. The kids are the reason I come back every year. I love working with them and helping them be successful. That will never change.”

There was one student last year who she needed as much as he needed her. He was not a fan of school in general and reading in particular.

“He had a very negative attitude, but I was determined to change that. I worked with him in a small group and one-on-one everyday. We may not have made huge strides along the way, but I was happy with the slow baby steps he was making. He taught me that teaching isn’t only academics; it’s relationships as well. He definitely helped me grow as a teacher and I will never forget that.”

Price is one of 15 Teachers of the Year for Mustang Public Schools. She’ll be competing with 14 other site Teachers of the Year for the title of District Teacher of the Year. The winner will be announced at a banquet in March.
